Annual or perennial herbs, usually ± succulent. Stipules present or 0. Leaves alternate, opposite or whorled, simple. Inflorescences solitary, cymose, loosely dichasial, in the form of an umbel or cluster. Flowers bisexual, ± actinomorphic. Perianth segments 5, free, persistent. Staminodes often present, sometimes petaloid. Stamens 3-many. Ovary superior, of united carpels; ovules 1, few or many. Fruit an achene, mericarp or loculicidal capsule. Worldwide: 13 genera and 130 species, in tropical and warm areas, especially South Africa. Burundi: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
