Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Culm scapose. Leaves eligulate. Involucral bracts leaf-like, sheathing. Inflorescence a sessile or shortly stalked cluster of spikelets; glumes 2 below the flower. Nutlets ribbed.
This genus is closely related to Scleria.

Worldwide: 7 species in the Old World and one in South America.
