Herbs, sometimes scandent. Leaves opposite, simple, usually scabrid, 3-veined from the base. Capitula heterogamous and radiate. Phyllaries 2–3-seriate, imbricate. Receptacular scales present. Ray florets female or neuter; limb 3-toothed. Disk florets bisexual. Achenes slightly compressed, few-angled or cylindrical, without wings. Pappus of few to several caducous forwardly barbed bristles. Derivation of name: from Greek lipos meaning fat or grease and thrix, hair; meaning not known Worldwide: Tropical and South Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Burundi: 2 taxa. |
