Terrestrial herbs, growing from tubers. Leaves ± basal on the flowering stem or on a separate shoot with sheathing leaves along the flowering stem. Inflorescence few to many-flowered; bracts often large and reflexed. Flowers non-resupinate. Petals and sepals similar, often partly united with the lip. Lip forming a hood with broad or narrow mouth, 2-spurred from the base; spurs rarely 0. Column inside the lip; pollinia 2. Worldwide: Over 100 species, mostly in Africa, with 5 in Madagascar and 2 in Asia. Burundi: 11 taxa. |
