Climbers or lianes. Leaves simple, not peltate, entire. Male inflorescences of false racemes, composed of 2-4-flowered cymes; flowers numerous. Male flowers: sepals 6, 3 inner much larger than outer petals 6, rarely 3, fleshy with inrolled margin; stamens 3 (in ours); anthers opening by a longitudinal slit. Female inflorescences of false racemes; sepals and petals similar to male; carpels 3. Worldwide: 32 species in the Old World tropics Burundi: 2 taxa. Insects associated with this genus:
