Description:
Rhizome shortly creeping, up to 5 mm diameter; scales up to 8 mm long, shiny pale brown, lanceolate, entire, hair-pointed. Fronds not proliferous, tufted, erect to arching. Stipe up to 14 cm, dark brown, subglabrous when mature. Lamina 6-38 cm × 1.6-8.5 cm, pinnate to deeply 2-pinnatifid, narrowly oblanceolate in outline.  Pinnae glabrous, leathery, ovate, venation flabellate, incised more than 1/2 way to the costa into obtuse toothed lobes with the basal acroscopic lobe prominent and almost free. Sori linear closely packed, typically covering the whole undersurface of the pinnae upon dehiscence, indusium erose.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: stuhlmannii: named after Franz Ernst Stuhlmann, one time Acting Governor of Tanganyika and an avid collector of plants.
